Polestar 3 Production Revs Up in South Carolina, Electrifying US and European Markets

Polestar, the electric vehicle manufacturer owned by Volvo, has ignited a new chapter in its journey with the commencement of Polestar 3 production at its South Carolina facility. This strategic move marks a significant milestone for the company, allowing it to cater to the burgeoning demand for electric SUVs in the US and Europe while circumventing hefty import tariffs imposed on Chinese-made EVs.

Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, expressed his enthusiasm for this development, stating, “Manufacturing Polestar 3 in the USA is a crucial step for us. Now we offer customers in America an electric SUV that is built in America. Exporting the South Carolina-produced Polestar 3 to Europe will strengthen our business on a broader scope.”

The Polestar 3, the company’s inaugural SUV model, made its debut in 2023. However, the decision to shift production to the US stems from the Biden administration’s substantial tariff increase on electric vehicle imports from China earlier this year. The White House’s move, aimed at safeguarding American manufacturers, quadrupled the tariff on Chinese-made EVs, prompting Polestar to proactively relocate production to South Carolina.

This strategic shift not only enables Polestar to avoid exorbitant import costs but also enhances its competitiveness in the US market. By manufacturing the Polestar 3 domestically, the company can offer its electric SUV at a more attractive price point, enticing environmentally conscious consumers seeking a premium, locally-produced electric vehicle.

Moreover, the South Carolina facility will also serve as an export hub for the Polestar 3, catering to the growing demand for electric vehicles in Europe. This dual-market approach underscores Polestar’s commitment to expanding its global footprint and solidifying its position as a key player in the electric vehicle industry.

While the Polestar 3 embraces American manufacturing, the company’s upcoming Polestar 4 model will be produced at its plant in South Korea, further diversifying its production capabilities and catering to different regional markets.
