Amazon Ends Drone Delivery in California Town, Shifts Focus to Arizona

Amazon is shutting down its Prime Air drone delivery program in Lockeford, California, one of its initial testing grounds in the United States. The company will instead prioritize expansion in Arizona, with Tolleson, a Phoenix suburb, slated to become the next location for drone deliveries in 2024.

While specific reasons for the California closure remain undisclosed, Amazon emphasized continued service to Lockeford customers through traditional delivery methods. The company also expressed gratitude for the community’s support during the program’s run.

College Station, Texas, will retain its Prime Air operations, alongside the upcoming launch in Tolleson. This expansion signifies Amazon’s commitment to drone delivery, further bolstered by the introduction of medication deliveries via drone in College Station late last year.

Regulatory hurdles appear to be a contributing factor to the program’s slow rollout. With Tolleson being the sole expansion for 2024, additional developments are anticipated in 2025. Whether California will see renewed involvement from Amazon remains to be seen.

The arrival of Prime Air in Tolleson promises same-day deliveries for customers, facilitated by a hybrid fulfillment center and delivery station. Specific launch details are yet to be announced, as negotiations with local authorities and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are ongoing.

Local governments, like Phoenix, seem enthusiastic about embracing drone delivery technology. Mayor Kate Gallego views this initiative as a testament to the city’s openness to innovation and a potential contributor to reduced local pollution through zero-emission deliveries.
